How to use the “Four Ps” approach for copy writing

In order to not only attract by advertising, but also call your potential clients to action, writing is the core tool. If that is done without structure and coherence, there would be no understanding. The purpose of advertising is to sell a product or service. As there are numerous products and services offered nowadays, one needs a powerful and compelling copy in order to advertise successfully. For that reason, there are several written communication frameworks. One of the most popular has proven to be the Four Ps approach.

The four Ps of copywriting, stand for promise, picture, proof and push.

  1. Promise

The role of the promise is to catch attention the right way. How many times have we seen and ignored advertisements? That is because of either clichés, unnecessary information or failed attempts to promote the right thing the right way. A beneficial promise is made with a headline, the most important part, as if you do not attract your reader with your headline, you lost them already. Tell them you’re your product is going to do for them and how it will improve their lives in a few words. Quite demanding, isn’t it?

  1. Picture

As the name suggests, you have the role of a painter painting a picture for your client. The picture should be as specific as possible, and your point is to get your reader on an emotional level. Use descriptive language and storytelling, and make them dream about enjoying the benefit of what you are suggesting or promoting. All of us decide to buy based on emotion, and picture is all about catching the right emotion and lead it to the path of acceptance.

  1. Proof

Now it’s time for serious action. You got your reader’s attention, you communicated their emotion, and now you need to back up your promise with proof. Statistics, graphs, testimonials, case studies and other compelling data that will demonstrate that the promised benefits will be truly delivered. Now the focus is not just the emotional level, but is shifting to the rational, and that is the reason why the readers should reach full acceptance of your message.

  1. Push

This is the final element that makes action more likely, delivering an exceptional offer. Push is about the realization of your reader of the sense of your idea and their decision to act and buy. Now you are connecting the beneficial promise and the picture to acceptance and a particular action. Explain once again and in more detail, why your reader should do what you are asking. Your target should be fully understood and make sure that you also understand that your readers have understood. If you are still not completely sure, use bonuses, discounts and special offers as your last chance.

Having all the information they need, your readers are now motivated to take action. They have understood your message and have accepted your offer for a high-quality product. Many times people need to be presented to understand, to be educated in a friendly way by a compelling structure in order to see the things you see in your offer.

How Much Does a Professional Writer Cost in Spain?

As a Spanish freelance writer, I have seen many job offers for 5 euros per 1200 words. Actually, one time that I bid for a project in which someone needed 6 posts of 800 words about belts daily for the long-term, I was told that I was out of the market because my price was 10 euros per post.

Well I don’t know how much you know about belts, but in my case writing 6 posts daily, no matter the subject, requires some research to provide fresh material each time.

As most clients usually expect the posts to be error-free, I usually need to proofread my own posts or pay someone to do it.

Of course it depends on the subject and on the text length, but if you want to provide a high quality text, you can’t write more than 6-8 posts per day. Well you can if your clients are involved in the work and they suggest titles and have a general idea about the post structure. But, most of the time the clients only know that they need a large number of posts for SEO. In these cases, if you ask me, you can only increase your productivity hurting your quality.

Let’s do an easy calculation:

Price 5 euros.

Posts: 10 per day.

Total income per month: 60 x 22 working days = 1100 euros

And now the freelancer needs to pay taxes= 280 euros -> 820 euros in total. Also, people need to understand that if a freelancer takes a week for holidays, he is not earning money because he is not working.

And now you are likely saying, well that is not so bad, isn’t it?

But, freelancers also have to look for jobs, write applications for new projects, generate invoices, and do basic accounting. And considering that if the freelancer takes a week for holidays, he is not earning money because he is not working. So, in the end that 800 euros are much less than what they seemed.

As a conclusion you can’t get 500 words posted by less than 8-10 euros if you want a professional writer. You can get a high quantity of posts cheaper, but face it, the writer is not professional.

I am not saying that hiring an amateur is a bad option, you have to decide whether you want to place your trust in a professional or someone who has a writing hobby.

There are a wide range of options in the market to choose from but don’t lie yourself with impossible options.

  3. Stop for a while. Do not hurry typing just because you are in deadline. Search for more details on the internet. Then, weigh if its source if reliable enough to be used in your article. Some people find time in creating articles in the coffee shops. It is important to think and reflect; then go back again.
  4. Worry less. – This four word one liner gives you chance to be confident in writing. If you have done your research then your post will be useful. Most of the times you do not need to discover anything, but to help people to understand something with your personal point of view.

So in other words. Do not lose time thinking that you are stuck. Research, take your time to relax, when your mind is relaxed put your information in order only taking the one that is worth reading and write it.

3 things you can do to get inspiration

No matter if you write in Spanish or in any other language, you probably have suffered some days that your brain is just empty. What could you do to put some ideas on?

  • Check social networks

Put some keywords in your favourite social network and see what you get. The goal is not to copy the fisrt post you see, but to get an idea about where the topic has a lack of information.

When you search on Facebook, Twitter or even in Google, it is common that you get some similar results in the top. Now you know what is there, try to think as a potential reader. What is missing? Answer this question and you have a great idea to write about.

Have you tried it? Children usually have an opinion about everything, and this opinion is probably a great and original way to start a post about something. In the end, you are a writer, you only need a nice and original point to start and the ideas will come. Let them try to help you.

  • Look at your old texts

One great idea is read again some of your old texts. You usually have a word limit, which means many texts have a central idea that is already developed and some tangential ideas that you could develop in your next post. Besides is an easy way to have an internal link for your site.

Tips to develop a content calendar

The work of writing content is not just about to write something every day. If you are a writer for a website, you probably need to create a content calendar in which you have to put the topics about you will write in the next post. Sometimes it is hard to imagine all the things that you will write about in the next month, so here I am giving some tips to help you to do it.

  1. Search for the next month in Wikipedia

Searching the name of the next month in Wikipedia you will get a list of the most important events that happens every year in that month. For instance, about march Wikipedia will notify you that it will be St Patrick festival.

This is a great way to be aware of the most important events in your society. It depends on your website and blog subject that you can get advantage of it, but it is easy that you will. Do you sell books? a post about books about St Patrick or Ireland, do you rent cars? a post about renting a car to go to party, etc.

2. Look for events in your city/region for the coming days

You need to be aware about the next concerts, congress, festivals, etc that will be ruling your city’s next month agenda. All these events bring people to your area and this people will look for information in the Internet, so you need to be there to let them know about your business.

3. Look for news in your sector

One of the objectives of having a blog is to become an expert in your clients’ mind about the thing you sell. So check the latest news about your sector and do a post about them. People that arrive at your website looking for that information is interested in your products.

If you are working from home it is very common that you don’t have a fixed income. Telecommute jobs usually look for flexible workers and it means flexible incomes. Each month you get as much money as you work, and sometimes the workflow is not so high nor it is your income.

How to be ok with your finances in this scenery?

First, you need to create a budget. Maybe you don’t have a fixed income, but I am sure you have some fixed costs. Creating a budget will help you understand your financial situation better and then create an emergency plan in case difficult times come.

Let’s do it simple. A budget has two big sides: Incomes and costs.

Having an accurate idea about your costs

Costs are easier to calculate. Of course sometimes can happen unexpected costs, but  it is not an everyday problem. Let’s focus in the costs that you already know you will have.

Make a list of your costs. Order them regarding its importance. This doesn’t mean that bigger costs are more important than little ones. Put the costs you need to have first, regardless their amount, and the ones that you can avoid in the end.

Now that you have your costs ordered. Take a look and make a line under the last costs that you think are unavoidable. The costs above the line are your fixed costs. The rest are variable costs and you should be able to stop them in case you need it.

Doing this in a situation in which you are not pushed by the need to cut your costs, helps you to be more objective about the ones you can or can’t remove.

Looking the income

No it is time to think about your income sources.

Create a list with your income sources, and try to figure out how much is the average income you get from each source and how much it can vary each month (100% … 20%).

For example you can have a client that sometimes asks very big projects, but that is not regular in his demands. Imagine this client have asked you three works in last year for $1000, $400 and $1000. If you work 12 months per year this means you get $24000 in the full year and $200 per month from this client. However, the income from this client varies 100%. Other client could have tasks every month, for instance $100, and the variation rate could be 0%, if each of the 12 months in the year you have received $100.

With this work, you have a better idea about who are your clients, what is their seasonality and which ones you can think about as fixed income and which ones not.

Of course, nothing is secure in this life, and you always have to work to get brand new clients, but have a clear idea of your situation only can help.

With this little exercise you can think in your finances in a much more accurate way.
